In theory, social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace should help college students meet new people outside their existing social groups and help students who live at home expand their horizons.

But a new study suggests that students use the sites largely to communicate with people they already know, and tend to use such sites along racial and ethnic lines. And the study shows that students who live at home actually use the sites less than those who live on campus.

A study shows that the social networking sites that students choose has much to do with race.

Use of social networking sites varies by race and ethnicity, a new Northwestern University study found. Many students use more than one site. Here are results of a survey showing the percentage of each race that uses each site.
Race -- Facebook, MySpace

Whites -- 83 percent, 57 percent

Hispanics -- 60 percent, 73 percent

Blacks -- 84 percent, 58 percent

Asian Americans -- 84 percent, 39 percent

Also, 13 percent of Asian Americans used Xanga and 10 percent used Friendster, compared with less than 3 percent for other groups.
The study, by Northwestern University assistant communications Professor Eszter Hargittai, was published recently in the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication. Hargittai surveyed 1,000 students at the University of Illinois at Chicago about their use of social networking sites.

Una de las características de la Web 2,0 es la proliferación de servicios y aplicaciones disponibles desde el propio navegador. Ya conocemos servicios web para almacenar y compartir vídeos, fotografías, presentaciones, nuestros favoritos, etc. Esta misma filosofía de software social impregna a edu 2.0, un servicio de educación web gratuito para profesores, estudiantes y padres, fundado por Graham Glass.

Vale la pena explorar este sitio web como posible indicador de la práctica educativa que comienza a vislumbrarse. Edu 2.0 nos ofrece una plataforma LMS para conducir nuestra enseñanza, tanto en situaciones de aula cerradas y tradicionales como en un sistema abierto. Posibilidad de aprender de manera guiada y personalizada. Libre utilización de recursos aportados por la comunidad y, naturalmente, la posibilidad de colaborar con otros educadores con los que compartamos el mismo interés.

No es, desde luego, enseñanza a distancia, ni e-learning entendido de la manera tradicional, ni blended learning. Pero es aprendizaje digital. Y es también, como dice Graham Glass, “a next-generation education web site”. Es un prototipo de educación 2.0.

A comienzos del año 2005 la Fundación Trust for the Americas lanzó su programa hemisférico de capacitación en tecnología y capacitación para el trabajo asociado con Microsoft a través de su iniciativa Potencial Ilimitado (Unlimited Potential). POETA se implementa en más de 10 países y cuenta con más de 15 centros de capacitación que ofrecen a poblaciones marginadas y a personas con alguna discapacidad física, instrucción en el uso de software como Excel, Word, Power Point y capacitación para el trabajo. En los centros POETA también se proporciona asistencia a micro empresas en el desarrollo de sus negocios y el uso de las tecnologías de comunicación e información. La Fundación Trust for the Americas cree que esta alianza con Microsoft tendrá un impacto a largo plazo en beneficio de las comunidades que cuentan con centros POETA y se espera que para el año 2010 opere al menos un centro POETA en cada país del hemisferio.

The joint DST/CSIR undertaking aims to introduce computer literacy into the ambit and experience of all South Africans through the implementation of the concept of Minimally Invasive Education. The aim is to provide people in rural and disadvantaged areas with freely accessible computer equipment and open source software, enabling them to experiment and learn without formal training and with minimal external input.
The initiative seeks to verify results in the South African context, of research conducted in India (Hole in the Wall), indicating that children possess the cognitive ability to acquire functional computer skills without formal training. The project entails providing access to a multimedia kiosk (terminal), which provides access to various applications and information. Similar findings in South Africa could serve to inform policies and methodologies to introduce alternative mechanisms for computer literacy. It could also suggest another pathway towards building human capacity in support of the advancement of the Information Society in South Africa and its adjacent regions.
